This video does a nice job explaining the basic plot structure of stories and the importance of the conflict. Watch this video using the notes page provided in class. This will help prepare for the coming readings this year.

Setting
Why is setting important? It not just knowing where or when the story is taking place, but why is it significant to the story? There is a video and a link that will help to see why setting plays such an important and often under-emphasized part of a story.
Now that we know why the setting is important to the story, click on the link below and watch the video to see how to analyze the effect setting has on the characters. Make a chart to bring to class with elements the video uses in its analysis of setting and character.
Character
When talking about character, its not just who the characters are, but how are they developed in the story? What significance do these character have? How & why did the author create this character? To consider this one needs to understand the many facets of building a character- How do they look, do they change, is their personality relatable, why are they important to the development of the story?

Inferences, Symbols & Symbolism
This year students are going to be expected to analyze texts on a deeper level and look beyond the superficial elements or story plot. They will need to look at the elements from a more critical viewpoint. This is where symbolism and inferences come into play. Each of these literary devices are used to see the story in a deeper context. The following videos explain these
THEME
Last but not least is theme. This is when the reader looks at all of the events, or the plot, of the story and determines what lesson or message the author has made through the telling of the story. Theme is a complex inference made by the reader, and stories often have multiple themes. Refer to the information provided below for more details on determining theme.
